Just in time for Spring 2018, we have launched the Delicious Whangarei Tour. The Whangarei region has many spectacular scenic spots and hundreds of skilled food and drink artisans, producing delicious local delicacies.
This fabulous tour starts in Whangarei with a morning coffee boost from a local espresso bar, then moves on to a honey manufacturer and an artisan cheese factory. After a snack stop at beautiful Langs Beach, we visit an olive oil grove, a boutique chocolatier and a beautiful vineyard, all within the gorgeous Mangawhai area.
The Delicious Whangarei Trail takes you on a whirlwind journey. You will be able to meet the lovely locals, learn how their product is created, sample some of the deliciousness, and perhaps take some home for yourself! Tastings and samples are provided at all stops, and a lovely winemakers lunch awaits us at the vineyard.
Our Delicious Providers
Ants at Luna Espresso
Local legend Ants opened Luna Espresso earlier this year. Situated in a cosy space in 116 Bank Street, Arts and Community Events Hub, he is making a name for himself for the best espresso coffee in Whangarei. Passionate about community development, Ants uses local Northland roaster Tohorã Coffee. It’s the perfect place to start the day!
Stacey and Logan at Helmsdale Hives
Stacey and Logan operate a small family apiary business out of their farm in Waipu, Northland. They are passionate about their bees, and have a small scale tailor-made packing house. This allows them to ensure waste is minimised and the raw honey is processed without destroying the natural beneficial properties. Helmsdale Hives also provide certified packing services for other Whangarei beekeepers to assist them with packaging, labelling and marketing of their own honey products. They produce a wide range of honey products, from MG and UMF-certified Manuka and Kanuka to raw and bush honey. All available for your tasting pleasure!
Zev at Grinning Gecko Cheese
Award-winning cheese maker Zev is the lively host at our third stop for the day. Zev fell into cheese-making almost accidentally, but appears to have a special knack for the industry! He has already won domestic and international awards for his locally produced cheeses. At Grinning Gecko the cheese is hand-made by the team on site, and you can see the factory through the viewing room. Come sample some delicious brie, or famous Northland Blue.
Bennetts of Mangawhai
Our first stop in Mangawhai is at gourmet chocolatier Bennetts, what sweet tooth dreams are made of. Once we arrive, we have a guided tour of the chocolate shop. A demonstration by one of the chocolate makers can be viewed through the gallery into the factory. After this, guests can browse through the shop and are given a little goodie bag of handmade chocolate as they depart.
Linda and Chris at Olives on the Hill
Linda and Chris started Olives on the Hill in 2012. They have three different types of olives within the grove, Leccino, Frantoio and Ascolano. All three varieties produce very distinct, high-quality oils. Their beautiful block in Mangawhai is the perfect spot for a stroll, where Linda explains the hard work that goes into the production of their beautiful product, from pruning and grafting the trees, to harvesting the olives. We then get a chance to taste and compare the oils, and also sample the delicious homemade vinaigrette.
Nikki and John at Te Whai Bay Vineyard
Nikki and John have a boutique vineyard nestled in the foothills of the Brynderwyn range in Mangawhai. They produce handcrafted, high-quality wines using both their own estate grown grapes and grapes from other boutique vineyards. These unique small batches include Chardonnay, Merlot, Chambourcin Bourdeaux style reds and Pinot Gris. Their stunning vineyard pavilion is the setting for lunch, beautiful platters comprised of local produce, washed down with some of the gods nectar!
Please make sure to book at least a week in advance of your preferred tour date, so that the providers are available for you to visit on that day!
